What is the purpose of Policing Committee?

The purpose of the St. Albert Policing Committee is to maintain a proper balance between the independence and authority of the RCMP and accountability to the community and civilian authority through community input, increased transparency regarding policing operations, removal of political interference perceptions and assistance with dealing with local complaints.

Our primary objective is to act as a liaison between City Council, the RCMP Detachment and St. Albert residents to foster responsible community actions towards the creation of a safe and secure community.

We do not have oversight responsibility for Municipal Policing Services, which includes bylaw enforcement, traffic safety, photo radar, and nuisance animal complaints. For these concerns, please call the 24/7 complaint line 780-458-7700 or general inquiry line 780-418-6643.

For any emergecy matters, please contact the RCMP by calling 911

Who serves on the Policing Committee?

The St. Albert Policing Committee was established in 2018 through a Council Bylaw in accordance with the Alberta Police Act. Council appoints 6 local residents who serve 1, 2, or 3 year terms, which may be renewed up to a 10 year maximum. One city councillor is also appointed to serve on the committee and the Mayor serves in an ex-officio capacity.  The local RCMP Officer-In-Charge also serves on the committee in an advisory and non-voting capacity. The Policing Committee is supported by a Committee Coordinator and representatives from City Administration.

Where do I find the St. Albert Crime Map?

The City of St. Albert is committed to neighbourhood development, including innovative and responsive community policing, which is why the Community Crime Map has been developed.

Knowing the real picture of neighbourhood crime reported to the RCMP is the first step in doing something about it. Neighbourhood crime is more than just numbers; it’s about knowing where crime is happening.
