What Should Guide Housing in St. Albert?
Why Are We Asking? The City of St. Albert is advancing work to support future housing growth and expand housing options in alignment with existing policy direction.
This includes preparing draft updates to the Land Use Bylaw and completing a Housing Needs Assessment to better understand current and future housing needs in the community.
This work builds on:
- The approved Municipal Development Plan
- Council direction on housing choice and growth
- The federal Housing Accelerator Fund, administered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), which supports increasing housing supply and reducing barriers to development
- The City's Housing Accelerator Fund Initiatives: Transit Corridor Intensification Strategy & Neighbourhood Intensification Strategy
- Ongoing infrastructure and growth planning
Before draft regulations are finalized, the City is seeking input on four proposed guiding principles that will shape how housing-related regulations are drafted.
The survey also includes questions about residents’ housing experiences and priorities to help inform the Housing Needs Assessment and support future housing planning decisions.
What Is Being Reviewed Right Now?
The City is seeking feedback on four proposed guiding principles that will guide how housing-related regulations are written.
These principles address:
- Housing variety and neighbourhood fit
- Complete and connected communities
- High-quality design and public spaces
- Efficient use of land and infrastructure
What Will These Principles Influence?
The principles will guide how draft Land Use Bylaw updates address matters such as:
- Building height and overall size
- How new housing fits beside existing homes
- Parking and site access
- Landscaping and design
- Sustainability expectations
- Infrastructure and servicing considerations
- Compatibility between different housing types
Draft updates will be shared publicly later in 2026, and a Public Hearing will take place before they are considered.
How Feedback Will Be Used
After the survey closes, City staff and the project consultant will review the results alongside technical studies and infrastructure analysis.
A summary of the feedback will be shared publicly and provided to Council when draft updates are brought forward.
